Did Jesus know he was God as a child?

The short answer

Nobody knows exactly what Jesus understood about himself as a boy. The Gospels give one clue. At twelve, he called the Temple his Father’s house, and Luke says he kept growing in wisdom after that.

What the record says

The only words the Gospels give us from Jesus as a child come in the Temple story. When his worried parents find him, he says, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” (Luke 2:49)

Luke adds that “They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them.” (Luke 2:50) Then Luke writes, “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” (Luke 2:52)

That word “increased” matters to many readers. It suggests a real boy who grew and learned over time. Christians have talked for centuries about how much he knew and when. The Gospels themselves do not say. What Luke does show is that at twelve he already called God his Father (Luke 2:49). Anyone who tells you exactly what was in his mind at age eight or ten is guessing.

How Son of Man tells it

Son of Man is a novel. It imagines the years the Gospels skip. The novel imagines a boy who feels something he cannot name, a pressure behind his ribs that grows stronger in quiet hours. In chapter five, “Containment”, Joseph sits with him behind the workshop after the trip to Jerusalem and asks him what happened there. Joseph asks if he understands what it means to call God his Father. Yeshua tells him:

“Whatever else I am, I’m your son. I want to be your son.”
